The patient would then be referred to the fracture clinic where this cast is converted into a full, circumferential cast. The patient will then return at around 4-6 weeks to have this cast removed.\n\nSome evidence has recently shown that a removable wrist splint may provide the same support as a cast whilst the fracture heals. The splint can be removed by the patient themselves and so would not require the patient to return to hospital and could save money for the NHS. After 4-6 weeks, the cast is taken off at the hospital. \n\nA wrist splint might be used instead of a cast. \n\nWhen the wrist has healed patients can safely remove the splint at home, without the need for an extra visit to hospital. \n\nThis makes things easier for the patient and may reduce the burden for the NHS. \n\nAlthough both treatments are used routinely in hospitals, doctors and physiotherapists want to find out if a splint gives the same pain relief and level of recovery as a cast. \n\nThe DRAFT3 study, organised by The University of Oxford, will find out if treating a broken wrist with a removable splint gives the same pain relief and level of recovery as a cast. \n\nResearchers will ask about 2000 people from hospitals across the UK to take part. \n\nHalf will have their broken wrist treated with a cast and the other half with a removable splint.\n\nA process called randomisation is used to decide which treatment a participant receives. \n\nThere is an equal chance that you will be given a splint or a cast. \n\nThis process makes sure that the two groups of people are similar and a fair comparison can be made. \n\nTo work out how well patients in the study recover, they will be asked questions about any pain in \n\ntheir wrist, how well their wrist is working and how they are feeling in general. \n\nThese questions will be asked several times during the first 12 months after their injury.\n\nAnswers can be entered on a secure website, written in a booklet that is sent through the post or over the phone.\n\nAt the end of the study, all answers will be combined to find out whether being treated for a broken wrist with a removable splint provides the same pain relief and level of support as a cast. \n\nThe doctors, nurses and research team are happy to answer any questions you may have about the DRAFT3 study.",{"sectionLabel":286},"DRIFT Participant Information Animation",{"type":79,"settings":288,"title":289,"text":290,"image":291,"sectionSettings":293},{"imgWidth":81,"imgPosition":82},"## Background","There are over 100,000 fractures of the wrist (distal radius) in the UK each year; 6% of all women will have sustained such a fracture by the age of 80 and 9% by the age of 90.
